Golden Melody Nominee Hakka Singer-songwriter - Weiroo Chen

Nominee for the 28th Golden Melody Awards in the categories of "Best Album of the Year," "Best Hakka Singer," and "Best Hakka Album." Although hailing from the Hakka community in Zhudong, Hsinchu County, Weiroo did not speak Hakka growing up. In high school, he pursued a career in the music industry as a pop idol, primarily singing Mandarin songs. However, his path to fame was not smooth and at one point, he even experienced a low period in his life. It wasn't until signing up for the Hakka Tung Blossom Songwriting Competition that became his watershed moment. He sought advice from his mother and attempted to write songs in Hakka for the first time. To his surprise, he won the competition, marking a turning point in his music career. Subsequently, he learned the Hakka language from his parents. The song "My Dad Speaks the Hailu Dialect, My Mom Speaks the Sixian Dialect" depicts his emotional state during the process of learning Hakka. Today, he continues to use Hakka to compose numerous songs that reflect his memories of growth and profound emotions towards family.

Blending of Folk and Modern Art - Jinteng Lion Dance Troupe

Featuring a variety of performance styles, the thunderous beats of drums echo through the air, carrying a powerful sense of rhythm. These performances, with their resounding sounds, not only fulfill functions such as welcoming deities, repelling malevolent spirits and intimidating foes but also represent societal status. Consequently, individuals started integrating these rhythmic and symbolic elements into everyday entertainment and traditional celebrations. The image of the lion is recognized as an auspicious creature that protects Buddhism and possesses the magical power to subdue demons. As a result, lion dance performances have emerged as the most auspicious and symbolic displays in diverse folk celebrations throughout the Chinese-speaking world. Diverging from traditional practices, the dragon dance explores the realms of the clouds, gracefully soaring and dancing to the accompaniment of background music. Through a diverse array of movements and formations, it symbolizes not only a captivating performance but also represents the embodiment of authority.
